Dissemination of Silage and Organic Fertilizer Production in Meru Betiri Livestock Group

Doctoral team serving partnership (DMK) from Universitas Brawijaya in collaboration with thematic KKN activities from LPPM Universitas Brawijaya conducts technical guidance dissemination of silage and organic fertilizer production technology in the waste Care Community Movement group (GEMES) which is assisted by the Meru Betiri National Park Center in Sarongan Village, Banyuwangi Regency. This activity aims to provide training as well as assistance as an alternative to overcome the limitations of forage leaves as goat feed.

Sarongan village is one of the villages located in Pesanggaran District, Banyuwangi Regency which has a variety of tropical forest potential with various types of trees and green plants that can be used as goat feed. Kinds of green plants that can be used as goat livestock are corn plants, odot grass, mahogany trees, rambutan trees and many other plants.

Currently, most GEMES groups have goats with forage feed from the Meru betiri buffer village. Chief executive of Dr. Siti Asmaul Mustaniroh, STP, MP from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology said that so far the obstacles of the GEMES group include low efficiency in goat feeding which impacts goat sales profits, as well as the limitations of technology transfer in the use of goat manure as organic fertilizer. Efficient feeding has an important role in increasing livestock productivity.

Silage is a method of preserving feed or forage with a predetermined moisture content through a fermentation process by bacteria. In addition, silage is also animal feed that can be stored for a long time and is generally made from forage and agricultural waste. Through this program, farmers in Sarongan Village are taught effective ways in the selection and preparation of silage raw materials such as corn tebon, odot grass, rambutan trees, and mahogany trees and also the use of appropriate fermentation techniques to produce high-quality feed.

In the manufacture of silage animal feed, this activity facilitates a versatile grinding machine chopper scale appropriate technology for GEMES group that serves to chop animal feed ingredients so that the volume is smaller and easier to be placed in a closed container to stop the oxidation process so that microorganisms will ferment. In addition, the size is more homogeneous which has an impact on the acceleration of fermentation due to a larger surface area allows fermentation bacteria to more easily digest cellulose in forage materials so that the process becomes more efficient and faster.

Multipurpose Chopper Machine

In addition, technical guidance and assistance are also provided in processing organic waste from livestock, namely goat manure to be used as an environmentally friendly fermented organic fertilizer. This fertilizer is produced to increase the income of farmers by selling the fertilizer.

Technical guidance on making silage animal feed and organic fertilizer was carried out on July 15 and 16, 2023. On July 15, 2023, assistance was provided for the manufacture of silage animal feed and organic fertilizer at the place of Pak Setyo Wahono by the UB team, KKN students and also GEMES groups to participate in the manufacture. This activity involves experts making silage fodder, namely Mrs. Ria Dewi Andriani SPt, MP, M.Sc from the Faculty of animal husbandry, experts in making organic fertilizers are Mrs. Nimas Mayang SS, STP, MP, PhD from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, and Mrs. Rini Yulianingsih STP, MT, PhD from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology who gave an explanation related to the procedure for using a multipurpose chopper machine.

This bimtek event was greeted enthusiastically by farmers and members of the GEMES group in Sarongan Village. They welcomed the collaborative efforts of experts and University researchers in providing a real solution to the problem of animal husbandry, especially the problem of goat fodder, which is very limited availability of forage feed that could endanger the Environmental Conservation Area of Meru Betiri.

The achievement of success obtained in the activities of the Doctoral Program is understanding the knowledge and skills of the group in the production of silage animal feed and organic fertilizers so as to shorten the time of livestock cultivation and income to the maximum. Then the GEMES group was given a versatile chopper machine facility for the production of silage animal feed. In addition, GEMES group became motivated in the development of organic fertilizer production business.

Silage fodder and organic fertilizer making Bimtek Program is expected to be a sustainable first step in developing more productive, competitive, and environmentally sound farms in Sarongan Village, Banyuwangi. The production of silage animal feed and organic fertilizer is then carried out laboratory testing at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Brawijaya.
