UB DM team helps farmers make silage feed in Jember

The doctoral team serving partnership (DMK) Universitas Brawijaya again collaborates with thematic KKN and Meru Betiri National Park (TNMB) in running community service programs (PkM) in tnmb area villages. Sanenrejo village is one of the buffer villages in the TNMB area. Like other buffer villages, Sanenrejo village has several community groups formed as an effort to empower businesses for the common welfare. Two of them are the Betiri Sejahtera Lestari livestock group (BSL) chaired by Mr. Paeman and Arema Sejahtera chaired by Mr. Kusnadi.

Currently, there are several obstacles that cause livestock activities can not run efficiently such as limited forage as animal feed. This leads to a low percentage of livestock productivity. In addition, the business of processing organic fertilizers from livestock manure had stopped a few months and the test results of the carbon content of nitrogen (C/N) fertilizer has not met SNI. Knowing these obstacles, the team of Universitas Brawijaya carried out a series of technical guidance activities at the residence of Mr. Paeman. The event was attended by Mr. Meru Betiri, members of the BSL group, and members of the Arema Sejahtera group as an effort to empower the community.

Silage animal feed dissemination activities through technical guidance as well as direct practice are efforts to overcome the limitations of animal feed materials experienced by both groups. Silage is a method of preserving forage feed through the principle of anaerobic fermentation with the help of lactic acid bacteria (BAL). Silage contains organic acids that can balance probiotic bacteria in livestock. The use of silage as a feedstock can maintain feed quality while increasing shelf life so that it is more durable.

In making silage animal feed, Brawijaya University team facilitates each group of one multipurpose chopper machine. Multipurpose chopper machine is used to chop the forage to be fermented into smaller and so it is easy to store and the fermentation time required is not too long.

In addition, the dissemination of organic fertilizers is also carried out according to standards through technical guidance activities and direct processing practices. Organic fertilizer processing is done by two methods, namely by using EM4 and MSG. Both of these methods are expected to be an alternative formulation of organic fertilizer business that has been done naturally.

All of these activities are expected to provide benefits to the community in terms of Economy, Environment, and institutions.

“Hopefully, the collaboration, assistance, and activities carried out can be useful for you and all parties involved.”said Mrs. Rini as chief executive in his speech.

In collaboration with Mr. Meru Betiri, Mrs. Rini Yulianingsih, STP, MT, PhD from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology assisted by a team of Universitas Brawijaya, including Dr. Fitria Dina Riana, STP, MP from the Faculty of Agriculture, Dr. Eng. Elya Mufidah, S.Pi, MP from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Premy Puspitawati Rahayu, S.Pt, MP from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, and Ibu Dewi Noor Fatikhah Rokhimakhumullah, SE, MSA, Ak from the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, and six students of Universitas Brawijaya from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and the Faculty of animal husbandry.

In addition to providing machine assistance as a form of dissemination of proven technology and implementing a series of technical guidance materials, the Brawijaya University team also distributed guidance modules that are in line with the material and will regularly check the progress of the implementation of activities as a form of assistance during the adjustment period, both technologically, economically, and the availability of resources.

This effort was enthusiastically welcomed by the community and very grateful to Mr. Meru Betiri and the team of Universitas Brawijaya for collaborating to provide real solutions to problems in managing livestock and fertilizers that have been undertaken in recent years.

Mr. Bahruddin, as Forest police supervisor and head of Sanenrejo Resort Management TN Meru Betiri gave high appreciation to the Brawijaya University team in providing assistance and implementation of guidance activities for community sustainability in Sanenrejo Village. He hopes that this collaboration will continue.
